In January of 2012, the board of directors for Marshall County Schools in Tennessee voted for a new director of schools. Within three months, the new director had fired or demoted 100% of the African American supervisors working in the Central Office. Dr. Patsey Thomas, who had worked for the school district for 20 years, was demoted to a middle school physical education teacher.
Brian C. Winfrey represented Dr. Thomas in her lawsuit against the school district. The jury found the school district guilty of racial discrimination, retaliation, fostering a hostile work environment, and constructive discharge. As a result of this verdict, Dr. Thomas was awarded more than $500,000 in damages. This case is an example of The Winfrey Firm’s commitment to protecting the rights of employees who have been the victims of workplace discrimination and harassment.
